THEY ARE CURSED
"Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee," GEN 3:16.
Why did God place the woman under the authority of the man? We read in 1TI 2:14 that the woman was deceived, not the man. The man was not deceived in the Garden of Eden. It was the woman who was deceived. The Lord is taking note of that. "And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression."
When the woman was in the Garden of Eden, she was deceived to believe that through rebellion she could become equal with God. "...and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil," GEN 3:5. This pride of self-exaltation was reproved by placing the woman under the authority of her husband. Now Satan would again deceive the woman to believe that through rebellion she could become equal to the man. This is not only rebellion against the husband, but it is openly defying God's authority to place her under her husband.
The Lord placed the woman under the man because the woman is more subject to being deceived. She is more subject to being brought into deceit and going astray. In the Garden of Eden the woman was deceived, and being in transgression she tempted Adam. Adam sinned, but he was not deceived. The woman was deceived, and she tempted Adam. He fell because of the woman.
"For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil." GEN 3:5. Eve was deceived to believe that she should decide what was right, and what was wrong. She should be as a god, knowing good and evil. This is where rebellion was born. "And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat," GEN 3:6. It was the woman who was deceived.
The Word of God tells us that this is why "...he shall rule over thee," GEN 3:16. I want you to understand that in the Garden of Eden the woman was placed under the authority of the man. "Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee." This is the curse that God placed upon the woman in the Garden of Eden.
God also placed a curse upon the serpent. "And the Lord God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life: And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel," GEN 3:14-15.
Then He spoke of the first gospel. What was that gospel? The seed of the woman, "...shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise His heel." That is where the Lord Jesus Christ was first proclaimed; He was the seed of the woman of whom the Lord spoke, and that is where the curse was pronounced upon the serpent.
There was also a curse pronounced upon Adam, and what was that? "And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life; Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field; In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return," GEN 3:17-19. This is the curse God placed upon man.
It was God who placed this curse upon the woman; we must understand this. This was the Lord's doing, and it will never change as long as man and woman live upon the face of this earth. The Lord said to her, "Thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee." That is the commandment of the Lord. Amen.
Whom the Lord Jehovah loves,
He in various ways reproves;
Tis His settled, wise decree,
That His sons chastised shall be.
Them to wean from self and sin,
Try the grace He works within;
Strip them of each idol god;
Make them prize the Saviours blood.
Teach them what and where they are;
Draw forth patience, faith, and prayer;
Make them closer cling to Christ,
And in Him alone rejoice.
Father, make us clearly view
What Thy love designs to do;
And in every trying case,
Trust Thy faithfulness and grace.
