THE CHARACTER OF A HEALTHY CHURCH

But speak thou the things which become sound doctrine: TIT 2:1

 Whereas -- our text begins with the word "But," we need to take it in the context of the previous verse. TIT 1:16 says, "They profess that they know God; but in works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate."

Those who profess to know God so often begin well -- showing much love -- but when the Lord sends a slight test of how deep that love is rooted -- we all to often find what Jesus said in " . . . many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many. And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold. 13 But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved," MAT 24:11-13.

A love that does not wax cold -- is a love that can stand the test spoken of in 1PE 2:20-23, "For what glory is it, if, when ye be buffeted for your faults, ye shall take it patiently? but if, when ye do well, and suffer for it, ye take it patiently, this is acceptable with God. 21 For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps: 22 Who did no sin, neither was guile [i.e., craft or deceit] found in his mouth: 23 Who, when he was reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered, he threatened not; but committed himself to him that judgeth righteously."

Before any church will develop a healthy character -- there must be healthy teaching -- followed by a healthy example in church leadership. Amen.

What shall I render to my God
For all His kindness shown?
My feet shall visit Thine abode,
My songs address Thy throne.

How much is mercy Thy delight,
Thou ever blessed God!
How dear Thy servants in Thy sight!
How precious is their blood!

How happy all Thy servants are!
How great Thy grace to me!
My life, which Thou hast made Thy care,
Lord I devote to Thee.

Now I am Thine, forever Thine,
Nor shall my purpose move;
Thy hand hath loosed my bonds of pain,
And bound me with Thy love.

Here in Thy courts I leave my vow,
And Thy rich grace record;
Witness, ye saints who hear me now,
If I forsake the Lord.
