I have inclined mine heart to perform thy statutes alway, even unto
the end, PSA 119:112.
We realize David spoke of the feast of comforts in the previous verse
which cannot be separated from the actions motivated by the heart.
Verse 111 says, "Thy testimonies have I taken as an heritage for
ever: for they are the rejoicing of my heart." Such spiritual dainties motivate the
heart to endure unto the end; there is a precious inheritance found in the testimonies of
Christ. This feast on which the soul can delight cannot be separated from the actions that
follow.
When the heart is feasting upon the things of Christ, the actions will
conform to the actions of Christ. There will be an inclination of the heart to do what is
pleasing to the Lord. This is the fruit of salvation.
The motivation is the result of the blessedness found in the Person of
Christ. This frame of heart is the fruit of the Spirit. It is the beauty we see in the
Person of Christ which inclines and motivates the heart to a ready desire to serve God.
Acceptable service in the kingdom of Christ is motivated by love to Him
with a heart reconciled to the will of God. The fruit of the Spirit produces the new heart
with a new desire.
David not only says, "I have inclined mine heart to perform
thy statutes alway, even unto the end," but he also recognizes this inclination as
the Divine influence of the Holy Spirit upon his heart which reveals itself in his life.
See the perfect harmony between "I have inclined mine heart" and the work of
grace. If we go to V:36 we see how David asks of the Lord, "Incline my heart unto thy
testimonies, and not to covetousness."
