Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and shew thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not, Jer 33:3.

Jeremiah was shut up in the court of the prison when the Lord spoke this blessed promise to him. My prayer and hearts desire is that some poor prisoners of the Lord, who are shut up with some heaviness of spirit, may hear Him say with a soft whisper in their soul, "Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and shew thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not," Jer 33:3.

We are very subject to inclinations toward worldliness, if it is not our usual frame of mind. This is what all to often brings us into those spiritual prisons. Worldliness is very grievous to the Lord. God's people tempted Him in the wilderness, "And He gave them their request; but sent leanness into their soul," Ps 106:15. David experienced this leanness in his soul when he cried, "Give ear, O Lord, unto my prayer; and attend to the voice of my supplications. In the day of my trouble I will call upon thee: for thou wilt answer me," Ps 86:6-7.

Does unbelief whisper, "What profit is there in calling upon the Lord? Either your matter is to trivial, or it is too connected with temporal things." The Apostle Paul was given, "a thorn in the flesh, the messenger of Satan to buffet," him to keep him humble, 2 Co 12:7.

Whether you are burdened with sickness, a trial in providence--a wayward child or some, "messenger of Satan to buffet," your griefs--may seem little yet painful, like small points and pricks of thorns. Is your burden so heavy it would seem to break your back? "Cast thy burden upon the Lord, and He shall sustain thee; He shall never suffer the righteous to be moved," Ps 55:22.

God's condescension is so low to assure our needs. We are not merely counselled or recommended to pray, but bidden to pray. There stands an everyday precept suitable to every trial a Christian can encounter, "Call unto me." When it seems that the Lord has withdrawn and our sins rise up against us then we must cry out with David, "Hear my cry, O God; attend unto my prayer. From the end of the earth will I cry unto thee, when my heart is overwhelmed: lead me to the rock that is higher than I," Ps 61:1- 2.

The Lord said to Jeremiah when he was in prison, "Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and shew thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not," Jer 33:3. These, "great and mighty things," point to the Lord Jesus Christ. The Lord said, "And I will cleanse them from all their iniquity, whereby they have sinned against me; and I will pardon all their iniquities, whereby they have sinned, and whereby they have transgressed against me," Jer 33:8. Amen.
