A HARDENED HEART

DOES NOT UNDERSTAND CHRIST

In MAR 6:37-44 we read about our Saviour feeding five thousand with "five loaves and the two fishes." Afterward it says, ". . .they did all eat, and were filled. And they took up twelve baskets full of the fragments, and of the fishes," V:42-43.

Then our Lord constrained his disciples to get into the ship, and to go to the other side before unto Bethsaida, while he sent away the people, V:45-47. The lesson learned herein is of great importance for us to understand. This great trial of their faith was recorded for our learning.

The wind was contrary unto them: therefore they were toiling in rowing and Jesus came unto them walking upon the sea. "But when they saw him walking upon the sea, they supposed it had been a spirit, and cried out: For they all saw him, and were troubled. And immediately he talked with them, and saith unto them, be of good cheer: it is I; be not afraid."

When He went up unto them into the ship; ". . .the wind ceased: and they were sore amazed in themselves beyond measure, and wondered." The reason they were amazed is because ". . .they considered not the miracle of the loaves: for their heart was hardened," V:52.

Let's take notice of the scripture lesson of the loaves and small fishes -- to see if we can understand a little bit of this. We notice that the disciples were with the Lord Jesus when he broke the bread and fed the five thousand. Neither Jesus' disciples, nor those five thousand, understood the spiritual meaning of the breaking of that bread.

When the gospel is preached, the bread of life is brought forth by the hand of the Lord's servants "By the foolishness of preaching...," ICO 1:20/. That bread of life multiplies as it is placed in our hands by our Lord as it did in the hands of the disciples, as they carried it to the multitude.

There is such a fullness in the Word of God. There is no man who will ever fathom it or even come close to fathoming the depths there are in the Word of God. Jesus started with just a few loaves, but as that bread was broken and put into the hands of the disciples, that bread continued to multiply. They fed five thousand with only a few loaves.

Sometimes the Lord uses only a few words to grant the greatest blessing. I have had many times that the Lord conveyed a very great blessing in my soul from a few words. Often times it is just a single word in a message or a single word from a portion of scripture, and it also multiplies in the heart. As it multiplies, the blessing is conveyed far beyond what the Lord's servant had any knowledge of.

The disciples never understood this. When they came across the sea, our text says, "For they considered not the miracle of the loaves: for their heart was hardened." As we all do by nature, they were seeking bread for their body. They did not understand that the miracle was a lesson, which pertained to bread for their soul.

As we consider this narrative of their ride across the sea, I want to use this lesson to convey its spiritual bread to your souls. Let's see if we can understand that what the Lord is teaching us is that this bread of life can multiply in our hearts. This bread of life will feed our soul spiritually -- when the Word spoken is applied by the Spirit and multiplied in the soul -- even though it may be only a few words that apply. Amen.

When peace, like a river, attendeth my way,
When sorrows like sea billows role --
What ever my lot, Thou hast taught me to say,
It is well, it is well with my soul.
