CHRIST OUR LIGHT

"And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof." Re 21:23.

To rightly understand the Scripture that is before us for consideration, we must understand that Christ is the central theme of all Scripture. Solomon's Song 5:10 points to Christ where it says, "My beloved is white and ruddy, the chiefest among ten thousand," and in verse 16 that, "He is altogether lovely."

Isa 30:26 shows us how all the Old Testament types and ceremonies point to Christ. Even as "The light of the moon" is only a reflection of the light of the sun, so also the Old Testament types and ceremonies are a reflection of the light of Christ. Our text is speaking of Christ where it says, ". . . and the Lamb is the light thereof."

The Scripture teaches us that this light drives away and separates the unregenerate sinner from God. See how Adam and Eve responded to that light in Ge 3:7-8. "And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked." It says in Verse 8, "Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord amongst the trees of the garden."

Our Saviour tells us in Joh 3:19-20, "And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved."

Oh, beloved, what a delusion, 2 Th 2:11-12, to come to the gates of heaven with only a legal repentance, claiming a pardon for all your sin on the basis of Christ's blood without having been, "transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect will of God," Ro 12:2. "And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie: but they which are written in the Lambs book of life," Re 21:27.

This same light enlightens the righteous, bringing them to true repentance. In Joh 3:21 we read, "But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are of God."

In Joh 4 we see the effect it had on the woman of Samaria when that light shined into her soul! In verse 16-19 we read, "Jesus said unto her, Go call thy husband, and come hither. The woman said, "I have no husband. Jesus said unto her, thou hast well said, I have no husband: For thou hast had five husbands; and he whom thou now hast is not thy husband: in that saidst thou truly."

Oh, what a difference in the effect that this light has on His "peculiar people." Instead of fleeing from such light, this woman not only confessed her sin before her Saviour, but she did "shew forth the praises of Him who hath called [her] out of darkness into His marvelous light," 1 Pe 2:9. She cried out before the world, "Come, see a man, which told me all things that ever I did, is not this the Christ?" Joh 4:29.

Oh, beloved, when the light of Christ's love shines into the soul of a believer, then he understands that His "yoke is easy" and His "burden is light," M't 11:30. Then it becomes so easy to obey. "Only acknowledge thine iniquity, that thou hast transgressed against the Lord thy God . . . Turn O backsliding children, saith the Lord; for I am married unto you," Jer 3:13- 14. Amen.
