CHRIST VINDICATED BY THE SPIRIT
Excerpt from sermon notes of tape ministry #755

"Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you," JOH 16:13-14.

Our Saviour concludes the fifteenth chapter speaking of the world’s hatred against the Father, Himself, and what it shall unto His disciples for Christ’s mane sake, JOH 15:21-23.

Our Saviour turned their eyes from the flesh with the assurance of the sending of another Comforter saying, "But this cometh to pass, that the word might be fulfilled that is written in their law, They hated me without a cause. But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me." JOH 15:25-26

Christ sets a blessed example for His flock. Our Saviour would die to vindicate His Father’s justice, and His Name, but He would leave the vindication of His Name to another. "For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps… when he suffered, he threatened not; but committed himself to him that judgeth righteously: 1PE 2:21-23.

The central theme of our text is the Holy Spirit vindicating Christ’s Name-- by glorifying Him. Our Lord Jesus said in JOH 16:14, He shall glorify me [then He tells us how]: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you."

Our Lord Jesus is only glorified when we come to understand that it is in Him (not in this world) that our peace is to be found. The Spirit of he "will guide you into all truth," so how do we identify the Spirit of Truth? Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me," JOH 14:6.

When we come to live in the Spirit of Christ, we find peace that passes all understanding in time of trial. Our Saviour said, "Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid," JOH 14:27.

Our Saviour speaks of two separate forms of peace; "Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you." The "peace" He leaves with us is that referenced in COL 1:20 as a peace through the blood of his cross." Speaking of "my peace I give unto you," is in reference to the peace of mind He maintained under His greatest extremity where He was able to say while hanging on the cross, "Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots," LUK 23:34.

If we are privileged with that peace of Christ which He has promised to leave with His own, we can obey the Gospel’s law of love which our Lord commanded in MAT 5:44-45a, "I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven…."

It is impossible for our human mind to rightly evaluate the gift of the Holy Spirit of Truth, i.e., the Spirit of Christ. He not only dwells in us, but He glorifies Christ by filling us with the peace of Christ-- and causing us to walk in that Spirit.

ROM 15:13 says, Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost.

It is also through the Spirit of Truth that not only Christ is glorified—but we shall be glorified with Him. ROM 8:15-17 says, "For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.

The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together." Amen.

O Jesus, Friend unfailing, How dear Thou art to me!
Are cares or fears assailing? I find my strength in Thee.
Why should my feet grow weary, Of this my pilgrim way?
Rough tho’ the path and dreary, It ends in perfect day.

Nought, nought I count a pleasure, Compared, O Lord, with Thee;
Thy sorrow, without measure, Earned peace and joy for me.
I love to own, Lord Jesus, Thy claims o’er me Divine;
Bought with Thy blood most precious, Whose can I be but Thine?

O worldly pomp and glory, Your charms are spread in vain!
I’ve heard a sweeter story, I’ve found a truer gain.
Where Christ a place prepareth, There is my loved abode;
There shall I gaze on Jesus; There shall I dwell with God.

For every tribulation, For every sore distress,
In Christ I’ve full salvation, Sure help and quiet rest.
No fear of foes prevailing! I triumph, Lord, in Thee:
O Jesus, Friend unfailing, How dear art Thou to me! Amen.
