THE ONENESS OF THE TRINITY
Excerpt from sermon notes of tape ministry #756

He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you. All things that the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he shall take of mine, and shall shew it unto you, JOH 16:14-15.

 Not only the blessed Oneness of the Trinity shines forth from our text, but the humble condescension of Christ. The Spirit of truth wrote by the pen of Solomon taught the same self-sacrificial spirit taught by Christ in our text. PRO 27:2 says, "Let another man praise thee, and not thine own mouth; a stranger, and not thine own lips."

The Lord Jesus Christ taught this same principle by His example and, also, in JOH 5:30. There He said, "I can of mine own self do nothing: as I hear, I judge: and my judgment is just; because I seek not mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me."

Christ reveals the character of the co-equal Trinity—Father, Son and Holy Spirit. See what He said in JOH 16:15, "All things that the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he shall take of mine, and shall shew it unto you.

The Spirit of Truth does not speak of Himself either. In JOH 16:13 our Saviour said, "Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come."

Glorifying Christ is the grand object of the Spirit of Truth—speaking what He hears and showing these things unto you. This is the grand calling of every God sent pastor!

See what the Apostle Paul said in 2CO 4:5-6 "For we preach not ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord; and ourselves your servants for Jesus' sake. For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ."

Seeking to glorify Christ is the vital test between the Spirit of Truth and all human rational, ritual, or philosophy of men that dishonors Christ. Our Saviour told those who led the church in His day, "All that ever came before me are thieves and robbers: but the sheep did not hear them," JOH 10:8.

This word "before" is derived from the Greek word "pro" which could be more properly translated to mean "above, superior to, or ahead of."

This is the same principle Jesus taught in MAT 10:37-38. "He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. And he that taketh not his cross, and followeth after me, is not worthy of me."

Oh, what a blessed consolation our Saviour left for His church in His parting hour! He forewarned us of the trials and tribulations we shall experience in this life, but He also left a blessed assurance that the end should be well for those who follow Him in the way of the cross.

Our Saviour told His sorrowing church who followed Him in His sorrows, "Verily, verily, I say unto you, That ye shall weep and lament, but the world shall rejoice: and ye shall be sorrowful, but your sorrow shall be turned into joy. "

What a blessed comparison of how totally that sorrow shall be forgotten. Jesus said, "A woman when she is in travail hath sorrow, because her hour is come: but as soon as she is delivered of the child, she remembereth no more the anguish, for joy that a man is born into the world. And ye now therefore have sorrow: but I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no man taketh from you," JOH 16:20-22. Amen.

Jesus, Saviour, pilot me,
Over life’s tempestuous sea;
Unknown waves before me roll,
Hiding rock and treacherous shoal;
Chart and compass came from Thee:
Jesus, Saviour, pilot me.

As a mother stills her child,
Thou canst hush the ocean wild.
Boisterous waves obey Thy will
When Thou say’st to them "be still!"
Wondrous Sovereign of the sea,
Jesus, Saviour, pilot me.

When at last I near the shore,
And the fearful breakers roar
‘Twixt me and peaceful rest,
Then, while leaning on Thy breast’
May I hear Thee say to me,
"Fear not, I will pilot thee.
