OUR FATHER
Our Saviour taught by His OWN example and in His teaching that we are to come unto God through faith, addressing Him as our Father. In the perfect prayer He teaches us "After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name," MAT 6:9. The great work of the Holy Spirit is to reconcile our hearts with the will of the Father, rebuilding this family relationship which was lost through sin. "For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father [or Father--Father]," ROM 8:14-15. Very many of those who remain under the "spirit of bondage" unto sin and self do cry "Lord, Lord." Speaking of those who thought they died believing in Christ as their personal Saviour, many will cry "Lord, Lord," on the judgment day. However, the Lord Jesus said He shall say unto them, "I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity." Read MAT 7:22-23. Our Lord distinguishes between those unto whom He shall say, "Come ye blessed of My Father," and those unto whom He shall say "depart from me, ye that work iniquity." See this distinction in MAT 7:21, "Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven." Those who rightly "cry, Abba, Father" are not the workers of iniquity. The spirit of a true child of God is one who delights to do the will of "Our Father which art in heaven." "Blessed is the man that feareth the LORD, that delighteth greatly in his commandments," PSA 112:1. Those who have the submissive, childlike, self-sacrificial Spirit of Christ are they who " have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father." For those who remain in the service of sin to call God their Father, is to take His name in vain! Christ counts none to be His brethren who are not sanctified, or cleansed from sin . "For both he that sanctifieth and they who are sanctified are all of one: for which cause he is not ashamed to call them brethren," HEB 2:11. The unclean ravens may cry unto God for their providential provisions. God will both hear their cry, and supply their needs. PSA 147:9 says, "He giveth to the beast his food, and to the young ravens which cry." This is written to admonish the believer to trust in the mercy of the loving Father of all creation, and to teach us by His example to do good, even to our enemies. See the gospel precept to follow this example that our Lord Jesus Christ gave us in MAT 5:44-45. "But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; That [see that connecting word! That] ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for [or because] he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust." Crying "Lord, Lord" as a mere creature is not half as sweet as to "cry, Abba, Father" as a child with a submissive, childlike faith. GAL 4:6-7 says, "And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father" [This is a ground of hope and expectation of that eternal family relationship with the Father and the Son]. Wherefore thou art no more a servant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ." Amen.
