Sermon Notes #920

CHRIST IS OUR PORTION

LAM 3:24 The LORD is my portion, saith my soul; therefore will I hope in him.

>>Or text speaks of a very personal communication a person has with his own heart – or his very soul.

LAM 3:24 The LORD is my portion, saith my soul; therefore will I hope in him.

>>It is quite common throughout Scripture that we find a man consulting with in himself – or that is to say reasoning with his own soul – We read of our soul speaking unto us — as well as us reasoning with our soul.

>>The carnal mind is said to reason with the soul in LUK 12:17-19 And he thought within himself [this is in fact speaking unto his soul, i.e., it is that which proceeds from the heart], saying, What shall I do, because I have no room where to bestow my fruits?

18 And he said, This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and build greater; and there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods.

19 And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years [see the posture or conversation of the carnal heart – where the heart is the conversation will be also]; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry.

>>There are also Scriptures with reference to the voice of faith in the heart of the Godly — speaking unto their souls as we find in PSA 42:1-5 As the hart panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after thee, O God.

2 My soul thirtieth for God, for the living God: when shall I come and appear before God?

3 My tears have been my meat day and night, while they continually say unto me, Where is thy God?

4 When I remember these things, I pour out my soul in me: for I had gone with the multitude, I went with them to the house of God, with the voice of joy and praise, with a multitude that kept holyday.

5 Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted in me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him for the help of his countenance.

>>We also have an instance of the voice of faith speaking comfort to the soul as it meditates upon the goodness of our God.

PSA 116:7-12 Return unto thy rest, O my soul; for the LORD hath dealt bountifully with thee.

8 For thou hast delivered my soul from death, mine eyes from tears, and my feet from falling.

9 I will walk before the LORD in the land of the living.

10 I believed, therefore have I spoken: I was greatly afflicted:

11 I said in my haste, All men are liars.

12 What shall I render unto the LORD for all his benefits toward me?

>>We have instances wherein faith speaks to the soul — as it breaks forth with a spirit of praise and gratitude.

PSA 103:1-5 Bless the LORD, O my soul: and all that is within me, bless his holy name.

2 Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits:

3 Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases;

4 Who redeemeth thy life from destruction; who crowneth thee with lovingkindness and tender mercies;

  1. Who satisfieth thy mouth with good things; so that thy youth is renewed like the eagle's.

>>However, now see the context of our text and see how our soul speaks to us in faith.

LAM 3:22-26 It is of the LORD'S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not.

23 They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.

24 The LORD is my portion, saith my soul; therefore will I hope in him.

25 The LORD is good unto them that wait for him, to the soul that seeketh him.

26 It is good that a man should both hope and quietly wait for the salvation of the LORD.

>>The essential doctrine we learn from this is that when the eye of faith is fixed upon the Lord Jesus Christ there is peace and consolation in the soul. Our text says, LAM 3:24 The LORD is my portion, saith my soul; therefore will I hope in him.

>>The word portion at times is taken to mean a part of something – in others it is taken to mean our all – that is our portion or our whole – the Apostle asked

1CO 1:13-15 Is Christ divided? was Paul crucified for you? or were ye baptized in the name of Paul?

14 I thank God that I baptized none of you, but Crispus and Gaius;

15 Lest any should say that I had baptized in mine own name.

>>The psalmist clarifies how that our Christ is the whole of our portion in PSA 16:4-6 Their sorrows shall be multiplied that hasten after another god: their drink offerings of blood will I not offer, nor take up their names into my lips.

5 The LORD is the portion of mine inheritance and of my cup: thou maintainest my lot.

6 The lines are fallen unto me in pleasant places; yea, I have a goodly heritage.

>>To the man our Lord spoke of in the parablehis lands and possessions were his portion – as we see by the conversation of his inner heart. – "And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry," LUK 12:19,

>>The portion of those who have been redeemed from the tyranny of Satan and sin is our lovely Lord – He wants our heart and soul.

PHI 3:18-20 (For many walk, of whom I have told you often, and now tell you even weeping, that they are the enemies of the cross of Christ:

19 Whose end is destruction, whose God is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame, who mind earthly things.)

20 For our conversation is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ:

>>See how this is the same principal taught in

NUM 18:20 And the LORD spake unto Aaron, Thou shalt have no inheritance in their land, neither shalt thou have any part among them: I am thy part and thine inheritance among the children of Israel.

>>Does this pertain only to the Aaron priesthood?

REV 1:4-6 John to the seven churches which are in Asia: Grace be unto you, and peace, from him which is, and which was, and which is to come; and from the seven Spirits which are before his throne;

5 And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth. Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood,

6 And hath made us kings and priests unto God and his Father; to him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.

>>For those who are made kings and priests unto their God – Christ is their inheritance.

ROM 8:16-17 The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:

  1. And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.

>>Wherein do the hearts and souls of those who have such a blessed portion find their conversation?

PSA 119:111-113 Thy testimonies have I taken as an heritage for ever: for they are the rejoicing of my heart.

112 I have inclined mine heart to perform thy statutes alway, even unto the end.

113 I hate vain thoughts: but thy law do I love.

>>What could be of equal worth to occupy the conversation of the soul? — See what a consolation we find as we meditate upon the statutes of our God.

HEB 13:5-6 Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.

6 So that we may boldly say, The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me.

>>As David muses upon his portion — his heart overflows

PSA 23:5-6 Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.

6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.

>>Our blessed Lord is the cup and portion of all those who trust in Him.

1CO 10:16-17 The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ?

17 For we being many are one bread, and one body: for we are all partakers of that one bread.

>>The portion of the wicked is also referred to as their cup.

PSA 11:5-7 The LORD trieth the righteous: but the wicked and him that loveth violence his soul hateth.

6 Upon the wicked he shall rain snares, fire and brimstone, and an horrible tempest: this shall be the portion of their cup.

7 For the righteous LORD loveth righteousness; his countenance doth behold the upright.

>>Our text says, LAM 3:24 The LORD is my portion, saith my soul; therefore will I hope in him.

>>Think of what a portion we have if Christ is our portion

1CO 1:29-31 That no flesh should glory in his presence.

30 But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption:

31 That, according as it is written, He that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord.

>>It is of the grace of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ that we have our His merit for our righteousness – or acquittal before the bar of God’s justice applied unto our soul –

HEB 5:6-9 As he saith also in another place, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.

7 Who in the days of his flesh, when he had offered up prayers and supplications with strong crying and tears unto him that was able to save him from death, and was heard in that he feared;

8 Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered;

9 And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him;

>>This Spirit and grace of our Portion is whereby sanctification becomes ours.

JOH 1:16-17 And of his fulness have all we received, and grace for grace.

17 For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.

>>A rich portion we have in Christ in the way of the comports for our soul.

ISA 40:1-2 Comfort ye, comfort ye my people, saith your God.

2 Speak ye comfortably to Jerusalem, and cry unto her, that her warfare is accomplished, that her iniquity is pardoned: for she hath received of the LORD'S hand double for all her sins.

>>Abram honored his Lord by refusing any portion from the king of Sodom – clearly professing the Lord was his portion.

GEN 14:21-24 And the king of Sodom said unto Abram, Give me the persons, and take the goods to thyself.

22 And Abram said to the king of Sodom, I have lift up mine hand unto the LORD, the most high God, the possessor of heaven and earth,

23 That I will not take from a thread even to a shoelatchet, and that I will not take any thing that is thine, lest thou shouldest say, I have made Abram rich:

24 Save only that which the young men have eaten, and the portion of the men which went with me, Aner, Eshcol, and Mamre; let them take their portion.

>>Not only was the Lord pleased with Abram’s contentment with his portion – see what He told Abram

GEN 15:1 After these things the word of the LORD came unto Abram in a vision, saying, Fear not, Abram: I am thy shield, and thy exceeding great reward.

>>The portion of those who serve the Lord is great.

REV 3:21 To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne.

>>Our text says in context, LAM 3:22-26 It is of the LORD'S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not.
