And all mine are thine, and thine are mine; and I am glorified in them (JOH 17:10).

The glory of the Father was the central theme of the mission of the Lord Jesus Christ. In the preceding verse, Christ said, "I pray for them: I pray not for the world, but for them which thou hast given me; for they are thine." Christ shows the mutual pleasure He and the Father have in the glory they receive from their blessed bride of Christ. As Christ pleads for His bride, His Father’s glory is yet His central aim. JOH 17:1 says, "These words spake Jesus, and lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, Father, the hour is come; glorify thy Son, that thy Son also may glorify thee."

Our blessed Saviour is greatly dishonored by the world, that is, by those who reject Him and His words. Much is proclaimed about Jesus and His person, how we become justified and things that pertain to escaping the consequences of sin, but the words of Christ are rejected. Our Saviour prayed in JOH 17:6-8, "I have manifested thy name unto the men which thou gavest me out of the world: thine they were, and thou gavest them me; and they have kept thy word. Now they have known that all things whatsoever thou hast given me are of thee. For I have given unto them the words which thou gavest me; and they have received them, and have known surely that I came out from thee, and they have believed that thou didst send me."

Christ prays for those who accept His word. He does not pray for those who reject Him. The Lord Jesus is glorified in those who receive His words, change their attitudes and repent of their rebellious spirit.

The pleasure is mutual between the Father and His blessed Son in those who have received Christ and His words because they are both glorified together on the same basis. See what our Saviour told of this mutual joy in heaven over one lost sheep brought in His service from the fields of sin. LUK 15:4-10 says, "What man of you, having an hundred sheep, if he lose one of them, doth not leave the ninety and nine in the wilderness, and go after that which is lost, until he find it? And when he hath found it, he layeth it on his shoulders, rejoicing. And when he cometh home, he calleth together his friends and neighbours, saying unto them, Rejoice with me; for I have found my sheep which was lost. I say unto you, that likewise joy shall be in heaven over one sinner that repenteth, more than over ninety and nine just persons, which need no repentance. Either what woman having ten pieces of silver, if she lose one piece, doth not light a candle, and sweep the house, and seek diligently till she find it? And when she hath found it, she calleth her friends and her neighbours together, saying, Rejoice with me; for I have found the piece which I had lost. Likewise, I say unto you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner that repenteth."

Do you understand what the Lord Jesus was telling us in MAT 11:25-26: "At that time Jesus answered and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes. Even so, Father: for so it seemed good in thy sight." Satan loves a gospel without repentance, one that makes so much about the atonement and being saved, being delivered from the consequences of sin, without ever mentioning repentance. The multitudes today who teach carnal Christianity, teach that you can live in sin, but if you have accepted Jesus, you are saved. Then they go on to teach once saved always saved—eternal security. However, the Lord is only glorified in a repentant sinner.

How is the bride of Christ both the Father’s and the Son’s? First by creation and preservation. EPH 3:8-9 says, "Unto me, who am less than the least of all saints, is this grace given, that I should preach among the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ; And to make all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ." They were created by God by Jesus Christ. The Lord Jesus Christ was the Creator, and the Father was the Creator. JOH 1:1-3 says, "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made."

PSA 33:6 says, "By the word of the LORD were the heavens made; and all the host of them by the breath of his mouth." All creation is the work of the Trinity. God the Father created all things by Jesus Christ. This psalm says that creation was done by the Holy Spirit. In GEN 1:2 we read, "And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters." I find it abominable to say, "I believe in God the Father, maker of heaven and earth." The Scriptures do not teach this. God did not make the heavens and the earth. He created them. The difference is that you make something out of something. Creation means to bring something forth out of nothing.

In this sense all that is in the universe is included. PSA 50:10-12 says, "For every beast of the forest is mine, and the cattle upon a thousand hills. I know all the fowls of the mountains: and the wild beasts of the field are mine. If I were hungry, I would not tell thee: for the world is mine, and the fulness thereof."

Certainly all these things were created for their mutual glory, but there is also a special treasure in which the Father, Son and Holy Spirit have mutual joy. 2TI 2:19 says, "Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his. And, Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity." This distinguishes those who are Christ’s. They are those who have repented. They are those who have had a change of heart, who desire to live to the glory of God. It is a selfish religion that only seeks to escape the consequences of sin.

Through our marriage union with Christ, we come into a relationship with the Father. We have alienated ourselves from God. This is what took place in the Fall. We have been a citizen of this nation, but we have gone to another nation and joined it. We alienated ourselves from the Lord and from His kingdom and from his service and have become citizens of the world by nature. GAL 4:4-7 says, "But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law, To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons. And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father. Wherefore thou art no more a servant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ." This shows that we are adopted back into the family of God. That relationship has been restored.

Those who rejected the King’s words also lightly esteemed Him and His company. So many claim to have received Christ, but they reject His word. MAT 22:2-6 says, "The kingdom of heaven [that is, entering the service of Christ] is like unto a certain king, which made a marriage for his son, And sent forth his servants to call them that were bidden to the wedding: and they would not come. Again, he sent forth other servants, saying, Tell them which are bidden, Behold, I have prepared my dinner: my oxen and my fatlings are killed, and all things are ready: come unto the marriage. But they made light of it, and went their ways, one to his farm, another to his merchandise: And the remnant took his servants, and entreated them spitefully, and slew them." They dishonored the King and His Son. We see this today. People do not have time to serve the Lord. They say, Later. I have this or that to do first. To justify their neglect of serving the Lord, some will assassinate the character of the messenger the Lord sends to tell us His words.

We see a parallel to this in 2CO 5:20-21, "Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ’s stead, be ye reconciled to God. For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him."

A careless disregard for the kingdom of Christ is offensive. It is the greatest dishonor you could cast upon Him. See how this distinguishes between the bride of Christ and the world. 1PE 2:4-8 says, "To whom coming, as unto a living stone, disallowed indeed of men, but chosen of God, and precious, Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ. Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded. Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner, And a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence, even to them which stumble at the word, being disobedient: whereunto also they were appointed." We glorify Christ by being spiritual sacrifices as we sacrifice everything of self, everything of the world. We crucify it all to have sacrifices acceptable by Jesus Christ.

To believe on the Lord Jesus Christ is to accept His words and to religiously, conscientiously, humbly walk by them. Those who reject His words reject Him and will never see His preciousness. They stumble at His words, being disobedient.

The Apostle Paul gave such a blessed revelation of the heart of the true believer’s appraisal of the preciousness of Christ, comparing all else to the dung that defiles the earth. When you understand the preciousness of Christ, nothing else has any value. He was comparing to dung all the doctrines that he was brought up in. PHI 3:1-8 says, "Finally, my brethren, rejoice in the Lord. To write the same things to you, to me indeed is not grievous, but for you it is safe. Beware of dogs, beware of evil workers, beware of the concision. For we are the circumcision, which worship God in the spirit, and rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh. Though I might also have confidence in the flesh. If any other man thinketh that he hath whereof he might trust in the flesh, I more: Circumcised the eighth day, of the stock of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, an Hebrew of the Hebrews; as touching the law, a Pharisee; Concerning zeal, persecuting the church; touching the righteousness which is in the law, blameless. But what things were gain to me, those I counted loss for Christ. Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ."

ROM 14:16-19 says, "Let not then your good be evil spoken of: For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost. For he that in these things serveth Christ is acceptable to God, and approved of men. Let us therefore follow after the things which make for peace, and things wherewith one may edify another." The kingdom of God is not in rituals. It is in laying aside all of the externals, laying aside all the rituals, laying aside all the doctrines that you hold so dearly and make your whole religion of. All this being critical of people is not in the Lord’s favor. We should build up our fellow man. You may not have all your doctrines straight, you may not have all your dos and don’ts straight and all of the externals, but we serve God in righteousness, a right attitude toward our fellow man.

For Christ to be honored or glorified, we must make His kingdom the object of our obedience under the law of love. Therefore we not only must receive His words, but we need His enabling power. PHI 4:13 says, "I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me." We may not sit back and plead inability. We need to do what the men of Israel did when they approached the River Jordan. As their feet began to enter, the waters began to recede. Through the obedience of faith, the miracle of grace is performed.

When the Syrian leper was in a rage and was not going to go into the River Jordan, he was still a leper. It was as he obeyed, his leprosy was removed. When our heart’s desire is to do the will of God and we come into gospel obedience, we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us. This is where we see the sovereignty of God in our salvation, but it begins with our willingness, our receiving and accepting the will of Christ and desiring to do it. The first work of grace is that He makes us willing in the day of His power. If we are not willing to obey, we are still among those for whom He does not pray.

GAL 2:20 says, "I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me." We claim nothing of ourselves, we claim no merit in what we do. We receive the enabling grace of the Lord Jesus Christ through the obedience of faith. I do not preach a legalistic religion. I preach what the Lord Jesus Christ preaches, and that is the revealed will of God.

When the Lord Jesus says that we are his, we find that our lives are not our own. Our time is not our own. ROM 14:7-9 says, "For none of us liveth to himself, and no man dieth to himself. For whether we live, we live unto the Lord; and whether we die, we die unto the Lord: whether we live therefore, or die, we are the Lord’s. For to this end Christ both died, and rose, and revived, that he might be Lord both of the dead and living." Jesus is Lord, not only Saviour. Jesus means Saviour. Christ means anointed. He is anointed of the Father to be our Lord. He is anointed of the Father to be our Saviour. He has to be our Lord before He will be our Saviour. We come into His service, and thereby He redeems us from iniquity, thereby He saves us from our sins. The word Saviour means to save us from our sins. The word Redeemer means to redeem us from all iniquity.

Whereunto we live is where the real distinction is found between the bride of Christ and the world. So many begin well but when riches or persecution choke it out, they are offended and they walk away. JOH 6:66-69 says, "From that time many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him. Then said Jesus unto the twelve, Will ye also go away? Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life. And we believe and are sure that thou art that Christ, the Son of the living God." The twelve apostles found precious the same words that offended those who went away. Do His words keep you from turning away, or do you view Him as a fire escape?

Following our Saviour in the way of the cross is a way of self-denial. MAT 19:27-28 says, "Then answered Peter and said unto him, Behold, we have forsaken all, and followed thee; what shall we have therefore? And Jesus said unto them, Verily I say unto you, That ye which have followed me, in the regeneration when the Son of man shall sit in the throne of his glory, ye also shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel."

This word regeneration comes from the Greek word paliggenesia (pal-ing-ghen-es-ee’-ah), which means "the new birth, regeneration, the production of a new life consecrated to God, a radical change of mind for the better." Are we following Him in the regeneration? This produces a new attitude, a new way of life.

A hearty desire to live to the honor and glory of our Saviour evidences our interest in His words found in JOH 16:27, "For the Father himself loveth you, because ye have loved me, and have believed that I came out from God." Where is there a moving force that would draw out the Father’s love greater than those who honor His Son, receive His words and receive Him?

Christ declares the mutual interest He and the Father have in His bride living for the honor and glory of Christ. Do you honor the Son by the obedience of faith? JOH 5:22-24 says, "For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son: That all men should honour the Son, even as they honour the Father. He that honoureth not the Son honoureth not the Father which hath sent him. Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life." When His word is rejected, there is no claim of eternal life. Those who receive, honor and glorify the Son and the Father are the ones who have passed from death unto life.

The Scriptures are replete with teachings that the Father commands us to honor the Son with gospel obedience. 1JO 3:23-24 says, "And this is his commandment, That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment. And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us."

It is those who are willing to suffer shame for the honor of Christ’s name that He will honor before His Father. We can claim to love Christ, but it is going to be tested. Are we willing to suffer shame for Christ? MAT 10:32-33 says, "Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven. But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven."

It is those who have been sanctified with whom our Saviour is willing to identify. HEB 2:10-12 says, "For it became him, for whom are all things, and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons unto glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings. For both he that sanctifieth and they who are sanctified are all of one: for which cause he is not ashamed to call them brethren, Saying, I will declare thy name unto my brethren, in the midst of the church will I sing praise unto thee." We will follow in the footsteps of the Saviour in the way of the cross.

Salvation includes much more than an escape from the consequences of sin. Our Saviour is glorified with our purification from the pollution of sin as well. EPH 5:25-27 says, "Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish." If we do not receive His word we do not have His cleansing.

Being glorified in the beauty of His bride was the fulfilling of Christ’s mission. REV 19:5-8 says, "And a voice came out of the throne, saying, Praise our God, all ye his servants, and ye that fear him, both small and great. And I heard as it were the voice of a great multitude, and as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of mighty thunderings, saying, Alleluia: for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth. Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honour to him: for the marriage of the Lamb is come, and his wife hath made herself ready. And to her was granted that she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white: for the fine linen is the righteousness of saints."

Many like to say that this righteousness of saints means the robe of Christ’s righteousness. However, it is the sanctification that we have in the Lord Jesus Christ.
